David Karsten Daniels
Chapel Hill's David Karsten Daniels is a southern troubadour creating laid-back folk that sounds similar to Elvis Perkins, M. Ward and Will Oldham. Daniels has been home recording his lo-fi heart-weary tales for years with help from whatever noise makers he could find lying around (coins, pencils, etc...).
But on his latest album, Sharp Teeth, he has moved back a step from those eccentrically scattered blips in favor of a more traditional instrumentation and approach to songwriting. Now, he relies a whole lot on his gently-plucked acoustic guitar and cracking tenor. But D.K.D. also throws in some horns, strings and plenty of musical/lyrical nods to Dixieland and Gospel to keep these songs from turning into slow-core (shudder!).
